Things you will find out once you start your own business
All those ads on the Internet that tell you how easy it is to run their business are lying. The only person making easy money is the one on top of the chain. The rules of business apply whether on land or the Internet. I have read enough ads to know they tell you only part of the truth.
Being your own boss isn’t easy. It means that buck always stops with you. It means more work that you ever dreamed in your wildest nightmares. If a client has a rush job and promises you a bonus, you may end up forgoing sleep to meet a deadline. Exhaustion is a part of the game. Once the desire to run things gets into your blood, it’s hard to let go. You get an idea at midnight and you will no doubt run to your lap to make a note, lest you forget.
Even though your spouse or significant other promised support and understanding before this started, you will see problems creep in you didn’t plan for. The fact that this all resting on your shoulders may mean that all the other responsibilities rests on your mate’s. There may no longer be time for you to discuss issues. This makes for tension. Many marriages breakup during startups. It’s best to be prepared.
Collecting money from clients is probably going to be the hardest thing you ever had to do. Put your foot down when it comes to initial billing and never back off. Be up front with all your billing. If the potential client can’t meet your terms, another one will come along that can.
Plan ahead of time to have a separate account for business expenses. There are no valid excuses for using household funds to pay for business needs.
You will be on a learning curve for awhile. Be patient.
