Let’s talk about networking

Once the business is up and going, the next item on the agenda is throwing yourself into an ongoing marketing program.

 You need to add networking to this mix.  The latest buzz everywhere you look is social networking.  I currently am on Facebook, Marzar and Linkedin.  The only benefits I’ve been able to reap after eight months is research for my writing.   

 In order for this to work, you need patience to spend a couple of hours a day generating contacts and answering email.  It’s a time consuming job.  My observation has been that most users get hooked on it, akin to some ongoing video game.  That’s only ok if the time spent is turning into sales.

 Networking is important and it can help build and expand the foundation of your business.  Social net workers tend to have a library of pitches they throw out anytime a possible client floats by.

 I am not saying social networking can’t help.  Having an online profile on Linkedin and Facebook adds to your online credibility and your resume.

 Don’t forget old fashioned face-to-face networking groups.  This includes Rotary, Kiwanis, and Chambers of Commerce.  It boils down to the more people you know, the more people you have as possible clients or customers.

 Don’t be foolish in thinking that your business is going to bring such a flash to the established business world that the only work you will have to do is get the products out the door.

 If you can’t work networking into your schedule, teach a teenager or hire a marketing intern from a nearby college.  Do what it takes to get it done.
